EASY, Funnel Cake, Monte Cristo Sandwich - Brunch

If you like a warm, melty ham and cheese sandwich, it will be hard to not love this sweet-savory Monte Cristo-inspired brunch treat. It's easy, quick, and delicious for brunch.

Ham and cheese burritos rolled in funnel cake batter, fried to perfection, and served with a dusting of powdered sugar. These are unique and unforgettable.

Monte Cristo sandwiches are iconic and highly addictive. And most people can appreciate a classic, warm ham and cheese sandwich, so this unique rendition is bound to be your new favorite lunch or brunch item.

A traditional Monte Cristo tends to be a sandwich made with ham, cheese, a little mustard, and mayo. It is then dipped in an egg mixture and pan-fried, similar to French toast. It is amazing and popular for good reason.

This version is utilizing funnel cake batter for the exterior and flour tortillas to hold the ham and cheese inside.

I feel the funnel cake batter adds to the brunch vibe because it makes the sweet-savory aspect very prominent. You can even serve them with your favorite berry compote, jelly, or jam.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Flour - all-purpose, sifted

  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar

  • 1.5 tsp Baking Powder

  • 1 tsp Salt - kosher is recommended but not mandatory

  • 2 Eggs - large, room temperature

  • 1 cup Milk - room temperature

  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract - you can substitute with a vanilla bean for even more flavor

  • 4-6 Flour Tortillas - large, burrito-style tortillas to fit more meat and cheese inside

  • Sliced Ham - leftover ham or sliced deli ham work equally well for this recipe

  • Swiss Cheese - use whatever cheese you have on hand, however, swiss seems to compliment the other flavors the best

Instructions: Let’s Get Started

  1. Start by combining your wet ingredients (eggs, milk, vanilla) and mix until well combined.

  2. In a separate bowl, combine your dry ingredients (flour, sugar, salt, baking powder) and whisk together.

  3. Next, combine the wet and dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful to not overmix.

  4. Let the batter rest for 15-20 minutes before frying.

  5. While the batter rests, roll your ham and swiss cheese into large flour tortillas. Burrito Style.

  6. Heat your vegetable oil to 350F in a deep pan.

  7. Into the rested funnel cake batter, dip the "burritos" into it, and make sure to coat all sides. Then, place those gently into your hot oil, frying both sides until golden brown.

  8. Be mindful of your oil temperature. Once they are golden brown, remove them from the oil and place them on a cooling rack or paper towel to drain the excess oil.

  9. While they are still warm, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and serve with your favorite jam or jelly.

Enjoy!
